life ~ a photostory

~ a life update in the form of a photostory ~ this is truly Julia's aesthetic, entirely by accident, most of her closet is blue and white stripes. she's always either wearing her airplane propeller necklace or her dream necklace, wearing double dutch braids.  Once upon a time, there was a girl named Julia. She was a dreamer, one with a good imagination and wide horizons. Some of her happiest days as a teenager were spent taking photos of dolls, lying in the street to get the perfect angle. Her dolls were like built in friends, companions wherever she went, on trips and vacations and outings.  As she grew up, Julia grew busier and busier, and high school was a lot of work. But she had goals and she did everything she could to reach them. One of them was graduating two years early, which took up a lot of time and energy. After hours upon hours of studying, she finally graduated.  Taking a gap year beginning in 2020, the weirdest year of the century, she had no lack of other thi

Josie's POV, Monday, August 8, 2016
"Follow Me." I said.

They followed me down a long hallway full of pictures and posters into a large room.
"This is our arts and crafts room," I pointed to two different tables. "Your crafts will be judged so you can earn points for your team."

The first had a canvas and easel, along with paper crafting supplies.

The second table was filled with odds and ends, as well as random items strewn across the floor beside it.

Samantha was immediately drawn to the paper crafting, and picked up the pen to begin.
Elizabeth reached for the box of sorted beads. I smiled, remembering the half hour it took me to sort the tiny seed beads.

Julie stood in front of  what I called the 'odds and ends' table full of ribbons, glitter, sequins, frames, rocks, and all sorts of other things to inspire creativity.
Katie walked over to the odds and ends table as well, looking and digging through the stack of items.
Noelle, who was left standing in the middle of the room, was drawn to a large painting of butterflies in the corner. She stood, looking at it, intrigued by the detail.
Amelia walked over and sat by Samantha.
"Can I help you?" she asked, picking up a piece of paper and some scissors.

"I'd love for you to!" Samantha showed Katie a pretty strip where she had written in calligraphy script her name, 'Samantha'.

Amy plucked through different scraps of paper until she found one that suited her. next, she pasted the name onto the paper and held it up.

"I love it!" Samantha smiled. "Let's do them for everyone!"

"This should be lots of fun!" Amy declared, sorting through the other scraps.

Soon the two had a stack of bookmarks by their feet.
"Last one," Sam told Amelia, handing her another strip that read my name.

Meanwhile, Julie stood at the table, looking at all the options when she spotted a large Styrofoam ball.

"Look at this!" she suddenly exclaimed.

"What are you going to do with that?" Amy said scornfully, pasting on the last paper.
With what you might call instant creativity, Julie looked at the ball, spun it on her finger and said, "A disco ball."
"Huh." Amy placed the bookmark on the floor. "Ta-da!"

What you will need:
foil squares
Styrofoam ball

1. Screw the hook into the top of the Styrofoam ball.

2. Next, glue the foil squares in lines starting at the top, like shown in picture below.

3. Continue adding squares until you cover the whole ball.
4. Once you're finished, let dry and make sure everywhere is covered.

Julie's POV, Monday, August 8, 2016

I was about to start gluing when Josie approached me.
"I thought you might be able to use this," she smiled and handed me an apron.

"Thanks, Josie," I returned the smile as I took it from her.

I gathered a bunch of foil squares and pasted them onto the ball with messy liquid glue.

Boy, was I glad Josie had given me that apron!

I continued working diligently for more than half an hour and then triumphantly holding it up!

"Do you like it?" I asked Elizabeth.

I spun it around, the light glinting off the shiny foil.

"And I made this!" Katie held up a little poodle pin (inspired by Kit's terrier holiday pin).
"Cute!" I replied.

Elizabeth was concentrating on the tiny beads, stringing them onto a long piece of thread.

It was so long it draped over her leg. I noticed that it had two strands... interesting.

Noelle had just settled down in front of the canvas.
"Hmmm.." I heard her muse.

When I glanced over at Elly again, she had a pretty blue strand finished too!
"That's great, Elly!" I complimented her. She just blushed.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Today's was one of the fun-est days to shoot. I worked for hours (I'm not exaggerating!) on the crafts. Julie's disco ball took forever and my hands were covered in glue (I wouldn't mind having another set of hands) because I had to hold it with my foot! Believe it or not..

Poor Amy.. She kept falling over. Not all of the junk shown here is from the Doll Camp, though if you look closely you can see Julie's old meet book in the trash bag (no, I'm not throwing it away, it's just full of books and last year's school papers to go through). Elizabeth's beaded necklace took a while as well, since those crazy little beads are so hard to string!
Now, back to the story....

Noelle's POV, Monday, August 8, 2016
Josie was headed my way and I still hadn't started.

We only had two hours (only!) and one hour was already done.

I had already mixed a pretty green color for my background, but I still couldn't decide if I wanted to do a butterfly or not.

"Don't be in a hurry," Josie assured me. "You can always just let it dry." She handed me an apron like Julie's.

"Thank you, Josefina," I thanked her and tied it around my waist, once again motivated.
I reached for the turquoise, deciding that I might as well let the background dry while I decided on the subject.

I looked back again at the painting on the large easel. The colors were quite vibrant, and I liked them. However, I liked my color better. I quickly swished on a coat to let it dry.

I borrowed Julie's Bible and a Sharpie from Josie. As I flipped through the pages of the New Testament, I found exactly what I was looking for.

I set to work on the piece of artwork.

After much consideration and work, I stood up, pleased.

"Joy," I read out loud. "Not bad..."

Josie's POV, Monday, August 8, 2016
It was time for the judging.

Team Koala stood at one side of the table, confident in their hard work. Noelle and Julie still had on their aprons, and I could tell that they had spent a lot of time on their art.

Katie faced her teammates, preparing a short speech. I could almost see the wheels turning.

"Team Panda, even if we do not trump Team Koala in this exercise of creativity, we will come back and defeat them once we advance to the academics round! Team Panda, GO!" she announced.

With a smile on my face, I approached the table of artwork.

"First, Team Panda." I decided. The threesome stood shyly on their side. Amy nudged Katie, and Katie stepped forward.

She picked up the little poodle pin and held it out towards me.

"This is what I made," she balanced it on her hand.

Carefully, Katie clipped it onto her t-shirt.
"Nice," I murmured, writing something down on my paper.

Amy and Samantha stepped forward.
"We worked together to make these bookmarks," Samantha explained, showing me the one with her name on it.

"This is the one with my name," Amelia showed me a pretty flower printed paper.

"We made them for everyone." Samantha held out two more, with Kathleen and Noelle carefully printed on them.

The other two were still on the table, and I noticed a dark blue spotted bookmark with my name on it.

They watched me, expectantly.

"That's very thoughtful and generous of you to make them for everyone. You made a very good decision in the paper backgrounds, Amy, and Samantha, you did a very good job on the calligraphy." I told them.

They were pleased at the compliment and I snapped a few pictures for the Camp Scrapbook.

TEAM PANDA!

I turned to Team Koala.

Elizabeth went first.
"This is a seed bead necklace I made," she held up the twisted threads.

She took off the necklace she was currently wearing and modeled her creation for me.

I looked closely at the intriguing design.
She had even added a clasp to the back. I was impressed.

Julie was next and reached for the disco ball on the table.

Julie stepped forward next and held up a disco ball that she had made.
"I used a Styrofoam ball and foil, mainly," she described the shiny ball.
Juliette held it out for me to have a closer look.

I touched the surface.
"Quite creative," I commented and marked down something else.

"Noelle," I beckoned her forward. I was excited to see what she had worked on.

Noelle took a deep breath and drew closer to the table.

She merely pointed to the canvas perched on the easel.

At first I just read a simple word, 'joy', and was disappointed but when I looked closer..
She had looped the verse Romans 15:13 into the letters!
It was beautiful.

A masterpiece.
I turned, my decision already made.
"Join me at the front desk in five minutes." I instructed.

Katie and Sam looked nervous.

FIVE MINUTES LATER...

I stood before them.
All six of the girls were gathered around my desk, eager for the announcement.
"And the winner for this first part of the competition is..."
I placed a chalkboard on the desk.
"Team Koala!"
Team Koala went wild with excitement.

The display table beside my desk was neatly filled with their artwork, of which all the girls were proud of.
